Soy Sauce Toffee Apple Crumble
Haiku Girl's runner-up recipe from the Kikkoman blogger challenge. This dessert works surprisingly well with Kikkoman soy sauce which balances out the sweetness

- 8 small, sweet eating apples
- 75g caster sugar
- 50g butter
- 1 lemon
- 2 tbsp Kikkoman Naturally Brewed Soy Sauce
- 60g flour
- 60g wholemeal oats
- 40g demerara sugar
- 60g butter, chilled
- a pinch of ground nutmeg
- a pinch of ground mixed spices
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Peel the apples and cut into chunks.
Squeeze lemon juice over the apples. This prevents them from going brown and also tastes nice!
Cook the butter and sugar together in a pan over a medium heat until it the mixture starts to go a bit brown/golden. Add the Kikkoman Soy sauce.
Add the apples and cook for about 10 minutes.Whilst the apples are cooking, start preparing the topping. Combine the flour, oats, demerara sugar, nutmeg and spices in a bowl. Rub in the cold butter by hand using your finger tips. You should get small clumps.
When the apples are ready, pour them into an ovenproof dish.
Sprinkle the crumble topping over the top evenly. Bake for about 30 minutes.
