When it comes to eating healthily, trends and habits are always changing, but now there is a new kid on the block, Plant-Based Recipes.

Traditionally people who have wanted to live a vegetarian lifestyle have chosen to just adopt a meat-free diet, cutting out meat and poultry and getting all important protein from other sources such as beans and pulses. However, there is now a widely growing trend for plant-based recipes and leading a lifestyle centred around a plant-based diet.

So, what is a plant-based diet?

As you would expect, the clue really is in the title. A plant-based diet is a diet that contains and focuses on food that can be obtained from plant sources. This can be a whole host of ingredients and foods, from fruits and vegetables all the way to nuts and pulses. A plant-based diet is not a strict diet and can often have a few differing interpretations. Plant-based doesn’t strictly mean all you can eat is plant-based foods, but instead, the focus of your meal is around those particular ingredients. A strict and complete plant-based diet would be similar to that of a vegan diet.

Why try a plant-based diet?

There are many reasons that people chose to follow a plant-based diet, these can range from ethical beliefs through to focussing on health. It is commonly believed that a plant-based diet is healthy and good for your body. This isn’t always the case, as the source of the products consumed needs to be considered and the processing behind them.

The best way to ensure you are eating a balanced and healthy plant-based diet is to focus on the nutrients your body needs to be at it’s best. Some key nutrients needed for a healthy lifestyle include protein, vitamin B12, calcium and many more. So, if you’re looking to move to a plant-based diet it is very important to know exactly what you can get from each ingredient and look for the best sources of vitamins, for example grains and pulses (protein), fortified foods such as cereals (Vitamin B12), leafy greens such as Kale and Cabbage (Calcium).
